Maersk Line Leads Fuel Switch at the Port of Virginia

Maersk Line, Limited Brings the First of Two Project Cargo Ships Under the U.S. Flag
Norfolk, VA, January 10, 2012 – Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) completed the reflagging under U.S. registry of the MAERSK ILLINOIS, its newest multipurpose heavy-lift vessel. The ship is one of two sister vessels that MLL acquired in September 2011 and which will sail for Maersk-Rickmers U.S. Flag Project Carrier (Maersk-Rickmers), providing breakbulk and project cargo service for shippers requiring U.S. flag service. Maersk and the U.S. Navy Collaborate on Biofuel Initiative
Norfolk, VA and Copenhagen, Denmark, December 12, 2011 – Maersk and the U.S. Navy are testing algae-based biofuel on the container ship Maersk Kalmar. The ship is en route from Northern Europe to India.
Maersk Kalmar has two key attributes that make it a suitable vessel for biofuel testing. The 300 meter-long container ship has a dedicated auxiliary test engine, which reduces the risks of testing, and its fuels system has a special biofuel blending equipment and separate tanks. More...

Torben Svenningsen to participate on Sea/Air Multi Modal Contract Panel at the NDTA Forum
Torben Svenningsen, Maersk Line, Limited's Senior Director of Government Sales, will be a panel member during the NDTA's 10th Transportation, Education & Training Symposium between January 30th and February 2nd. The symposium's theme this year is "Partnering for Efficiency: Enhancing Support for the Fleet" and will be taking place in Norfolk, Virginia. As a member of the Sea/Air Multi Modal Contract Panel, Mr. Svenningsen will discuss solutions to challenges the U.S. Military faces in delivering cargoes to our armed forces abroad. The discussion will focus on sea/air options to supplement existing supply lines.

Bob Bowers spoke at the UNOLS Workshop
Bob Bowers, Maersk Line, Limited's Senior Director of Maritime Technical Service, spoke at the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) Greening the Research Fleet Workshop on January 10th in Durham, NC. Mr. Bowers gave a presentation concerning commercial green initiatives using examples from MLL experience in raising efficiency and lowering a vessel's environmental footprint. Maersk Line, Limited participates in Joint U.S Agency-Industry Counter-Piracy Summit
Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) will join other U.S. maritime stakeholders in the second annual Joint U.S Agency-Industry Counter-Piracy Summit in mid-December.
Representatives from the U.S. Departments of Transportation, Homeland Security, Defense and Justice will join industry officials in a piracy simulation designed to strengthen overall coordination between all stakeholders by rehearsing for an actual pirate hijacking situation. Attendees will explore roles and responsibilities for responding to pirate attacks against U.S. flag vessels. They will also discuss current policies, protocols, procedures and decision-making processes and identify areas for improvement. The event is organized by the Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute (HSSAI), a federally funded research and development center, in conjunction with the U.S. Maritime Administration and Coast Guard. Stephen Carmel Speaks at the 20th International Seapower Symposium
Stephen Carmel, Senior Vice President of Maritime Services for Maersk Line, Limited (MLL), spoke at the 20th International Seapower Symposium (ISS) held in Newport, Rhode Island on October 19-21. The symposium was hosted by the U.S. Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and the President of the U.S. Naval War College. This event stands to be the largest gathering of maritime leaders in history and will allow the CNO to interact with his counterparts, chiefs of navies and coast guards from around the globe. The 20th ISS theme is "Security and Prosperity through Maritime Partnerships" and Mr. Carmel gave a presentation concerning the maritime domain and global prosperity. Bill Kenwell honored with Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award
The Navy League of the United States will honor Bill Kenwell, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Maersk Line, Limited with the "Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award" during a special topic breakfast on December 2, 2011. The Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award is named for a patron of the Merchant Marine and past National President of the Navy League. This award is presented to an individual in private or public life whose efforts and/or achievements have contributed substantially to an increased public awareness of the vital role of a privately-owned U.S.-flag merchant fleet, both to the United States defense establishment and to the nation's economic well being.

Gordan Van Hook Presents at the Military Sealift Command Far East Commanders Conference
Gordan Van Hook, Maersk Line, Limited's (MLL) Senior Director of Innovation and Concept Development, presented on piracy best practices at the Military Sealift Command Far East (MSCFE) Commanders Conference in Sembawang, Singapore on October 6, 2011. Mr. Van Hook is a retired U.S. Navy captain with an extensive experience in maritime security. Drawing from his experience both within industry and the Navy, Mr. Van Hook has played an integral role in MLL's security practices and the rescue coordination of the MAERSK ALABAMA crew, which had been hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. The MSCFE Commanders Conference brings together commanders and those they work most closely together to discuss area and global issues. Gordan's participation in the conference is a true honor as MLL was the only industry partner invited to speak at this event.

Maersk Line, Limited's Vessel Rescues an American Citizen in the North Pacific Ocean
On July 24, 2011, the containership SEALAND COMET was en route from Yokohama, Japan to Los Angeles, United States when the captain of the vessel received a distress call from the Japanese Coast Guard, requesting assistance in the search and rescue mission of a sailboat. The containership immediately diverted course and proceeded to search for the 30 foot white hull yacht off the coast of Japan. MLL Colleagues Speak at OSAC Maritime Security Seminar
The Department of State's Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) recently held its Maritime Security Conference on June 15 in Washington, DC. The maritime industry came together to discuss current maritime security issues and solutions. MLL's Patrick Callahan, Director of HSSEQ spoke about leveraging experience and private sector challenges over the last year. Ed Hanley, VP, Labor Relations at MLL also spoke on the roles of industry and the U.S. government in maritime security.
