U.S. Flag Transportation Services
Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) supports military, government and humanitarian missions through the transport of cargo on its container, tanker and multi-purpose ships. We also offer roll-on/ roll-off vessels through our affiliate Farrell Lines. Our customers rely on our unparalleled experience, maritime expertise and global intermodal capability to ensure safe, on-time delivery of their cargoes.
Our participation in the Maritime Security Program (MSP) and Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement (VISA) ensures that MLL assets afloat and ashore are always available to support U.S. government needs. We have shown our commitment to those programs by modernizing our fleet. Our performance (on-time delivery, good order and condition) with U.S. military cargo shipments has been consistently rewarded with an Alpha carrier status with the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM).
Flexible Fleet Composition
Our modern U.S. flag ships provide unmatched capacity to transport all types of cargo including bagged, liquid, refrigerated, wheeled, hazardous, breakbulk and project cargoes. To meet evolving customer cargo requirements, we have collaborated with our customers and responded to their needs by adjusting the makeup of our fleet. We have composed our fleet to deliver efficient, dependable and specialized solutions for U.S. Flag Preference Cargoes.
MLL, through its parent company, Maersk Group, owns more than 1,900,000 dry and refrigerated containers of all sizes and types worldwide. These containers are maintained to fully comply with the International Maritime Association’s Convention for Safe Containers standards. Our containers are less than five years old on average, and we constantly update them with state-of-the-art technology and materials. In addition, MLL offers several special equipment options to accommodate oversized and/or heavy cargo.

Reliable End-to-End Transportation
Although MLL is mostly known for its ocean freight services, our inland capacity and global infrastructure are just as high quality. MLL through Maersk international network offers U.S. military customers access to the largest global ocean carrier. We are uniquely qualified to provide door-to-door delivery by moving cargoes via ships, trucks, trains and ferries, under the control of a centralized booking and customer service operation. We possess the experience to deal with complex and challenging local security, infrastructure and regulation issues, including customs documentation.
Northern Distribution Network
As part of our commitment to the U.S. military, MLL supports the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) as an alternative supply route into Afghanistan. At competitive pricing, we offer P1 U.S. flag ocean service from the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts into Riga, Latvia, Klaipeda, Lithuania and P2 service to Poti, Georgia, which serve as the ports of entry into the NDN. MLL also offers P1 service via Rotterdam. We then move cargo discharged in one of these ports via rail and truck into Afghanistan through its northern borders.
Full Range of Value-Added Services
Enhanced in-transit visibility solutions
MLL offers an established satellite tracking and condition monitoring system to the U.S. military for sensitive cargoes moving in and out of regional operating areas. We can also provide this service for cargo moving via the NDN, using security devices mounted on containers, trucks or railcars, or hidden in the cargo itself. The system consists of an asset monitoring unit and an internet-based network communications center. A sensor in the asset monitoring unit communicates via satellite with the network center, sending hourly transport updates, as well as alerts of violations to users via email or PDAs. The network center provides stakeholders with 24/7 tracking of a cargo’s location and monitoring of its condition.
Cargo protection, consolidation, washing services and warehousing
We offer tarping of sensitive cargo for transit in-theatre prior to inland movement in order to guarantee the protection and the security of the materials being transported. Our cargo consolidation services are available in multiple U.S. and foreign locations to facilitate inland and intermodal delivery. We provide washing services for retrograde cargo moving back to North America, with a direct/P1 option from ports in Jordan, Kuwait, and Iraq and comply with Department of Agriculture (USDA) and/or U.S. Customs requirements. We can also safely and properly store cargoes in warehousing facilities around the world.
MLL can act on behalf of the U.S. Government to obtain customs clearance as required by local practice. This includes the coordination with shipper/consignee and local customs authorities; preparation of all necessary documentation for custom clearance; supplying forms to the receiver/U.S. Government for signature; and delivery of documents to the customs office and all local entities to permit release and on-carriage of cargo to its final destination.
